Mordheim in Warhammer Fantasy Battle is one of the most infamous settings in the Old World, a ruined city struck by a twin-tailed comet in 1999 IC, scattering shards of wyrdstone—a corrupted stone of immense magical power. Warbands from across the Empire and beyond flock to the City of the Damned, battling in its haunted streets for wyrdstone amidst mutants, undead, and Chaos incursions. Within Mordheim, we can explore eight key warbands that represent the diversity and specialized roles in this anarchic struggle: the Reikland Mercenaries, Middenheim Mercenaries, Marienburg Mercenaries, Sisters of Sigmar, Cult of the Possessed, Witch Hunters, Skaven, and Undead.

Reikland Mercenaries

The Reikland Mercenaries hail from the wealthy heart of the Empire, where disciplined soldiery is considered a point of national pride. Drawn to Mordheim by imperial decree and the promise of private gain, these warriors represent the Emperor’s most polished martial traditions. Their captains are often veterans of border wars, accompanied by noble champions seeking glory and young recruits earning their first scars. Reikland warbands rely on drilled formations and a measured balance of sword, halberd, and bow, turning chaotic street fighting into structured engagements. Their loyalty is to gold and duty in equal measure, yet their professionalism makes them dependable even when wyrdstone storms and madness swirl around them. In Mordheim’s blasted ruins, they stand as the Empire’s steady, disciplined core.

Middenheim Mercenaries

The Middenheim Mercenaries come from the harsh northern lands surrounding the City of the White Wolf, shaped by brutal winters and constant struggle. Devotees of Ulric, their culture reveres raw strength, courage, and the glory of battle above all else. Captains and champions often bear scars from beastmen raids or duels fought in frozen courtyards, accompanied by eager youngbloods seeking to prove their ferocity. These mercenaries wear wolf pelts and wield heavy axes, shunning shields as signs of weakness. Their approach to Mordheim is direct and violent: smash the enemy, seize the wyrdstone, and howl victory to Ulric’s heavens. In the ruins, they thrive amid close-quarters carnage, turning narrow streets into hunting grounds where only the strongest survive.

Marienburg Mercenaries

The Marienburg Mercenaries originate from the wealthy, independent port city whose coffers overflow with merchant gold. Life among sailors, smugglers, and privateers has taught them adaptability and sharp wits, making them superb skirmishers in the unpredictable chaos of Mordheim. Captains—often experienced corsairs—lead their marksmen and rogues with a focus on profit above all else. Armed with pistols, crossbows, and experimental handguns, they prefer to whittle foes down from a distance before swooping in for the prize. Their independence from the Empire has fostered a culture of cunning and resourcefulness, valuing coin more than oaths. In Mordheim’s fog-filled alleys, they stalk opportunities like seasoned traders reading shifting tides, turning ambushes and precise fire into lucrative wyrdstone hauls.

Sisters of Sigmar

The Sisters of Sigmar belong to a secluded order of warrior-nuns whose fortress-convent atop Sigmar’s Rock miraculously survived Mordheim’s meteoric destruction. Believing the city’s calamity to be a divine test, they have sworn to gather wyrdstone so it may be safely secured—or destroyed—before Chaos corrupts the Empire. Matriarchs and Superiors guide their novices with stern discipline, teaching martial skill alongside sacred rites. Clad in plate armor and armed with blessed warhammers, the Sisters stride through the ruins with unwavering faith, invoking Sigmar’s protection when facing horrors born of corruption. Their mission is not conquest but purification, and they fight with the righteous fury of holy avengers. In a city drowning in sin, they shine as grim beacons of divine judgment.

Cult of the Possessed

The Cult of the Possessed is a depraved congregation of mortals enslaved by the will of the Shadowlord, a powerful Chaos entity lurking within Mordheim’s Pit. Drawn by visions, corruption, or desperation, these cultists surrender their bodies and souls in exchange for dark gifts. Led by charismatic but deranged Magisters, they command Possessed monstrosities, mutants, and frenzied Darksouls whose minds have shattered under chaos. Their rituals involve feeding wyrdstone directly to chosen disciples, mutating them into living weapons of the Shadowlord. In the ruins, they move like a spreading infection, ambushing travelers, abducting victims for sacrifice, and reveling in unchecked madness. To them, Mordheim is a sacred crucible where the weak are broken and the strong ascend through corruption.

Witch Hunters

The Witch Hunters form the iron-hearted arm of Sigmarite justice, sworn to purge all taint from the Empire. In the wake of Mordheim’s destruction, they descend upon the doomed city convinced that its ruins seethe with heresy, mutants, necromancy, and demonic corruption. Their captains wield near-absolute authority, backed by warrior-priests, grim marksmen, and flagellants who believe suffering brings them closer to Sigmar. Zealots and warhounds accompany them through collapsed streets as they hunt cultists, witches, and anything deemed unholy. Wyrdstone is confiscated as evidence of Chaos, destined for the Grand Theogonist’s vaults. Their presence inspires fear and fervor alike, for they turn suspicion into fire and steel. In Mordheim, their crusade is relentless and uncompromising.

Skaven

The Skaven of Clan Eshin slink through Mordheim’s undercity like a living plague, drawn by an insatiable hunger for wyrdstone—warpstone to them, the sacred fuel of their dark civilization. Trained in assassination, stealth, and sabotage, these ratmen excel at ambushes and sudden bursts of lethal violence. Chieftains command agile Night Runners, vicious Black Skaven, and Globadiers armed with volatile toxins. Their society thrives on treachery, so internal betrayal is as common as attacks on surface dwellers. Mordheim’s shattered ruins and endless tunnels form the perfect hunting grounds for their schemes. Collecting wyrdstone increases their standing within the Under-Empire, and they will poison, stab, or swarm any foe to secure it. In the shadows, the Skaven multiply, unseen yet everywhere.

Undead

The Undead warbands are extensions of the dark ambitions of the von Carstein line, particularly those vampires seeking forbidden power hidden within Mordheim’s wyrdstone. Led by immortal nobles whose cruelty is matched only by their arrogance, these warbands march under cover of night. Necromancers raise dregs, zombies, and skeletal servants to act as expendable troops, while ghouls and dire wolves stalk ahead as feral shock forces. To the Undead, wyrdstone is a catalyst—fuel for necromantic rituals capable of empowering their unending quest for dominion. Immune to fear and pain, they advance with slow, dreadful inevitability. In Mordheim, they are patient predators, animated by hunger for both power and blood, spreading death wherever their shadow falls.
