Originally released by Games Workshop in 1995, Necromunda is the legendary skirmish game of gang warfare in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Though it has seen many editions and expansions, the six original House gangs from the first edition remain iconic: Goliath, Escher, Van Saar, Cawdor, Orlock, and Delaque.

Necromunda – the Hive World
Necromunda is a brutal hive world where billions toil in vast manufactorums to supply the Imperium’s endless wars. Below the noble spire, in the toxic depths of the underhive, the Great Houses wage eternal gang war over resources, prestige, and simple survival. Wyrdstone is long gone; here the currency is territory, juice, and raw power.
The Six Original House Gangs
House Goliath — Engineered Servitors Turned Clan House
House Goliath began as a population of gene-forged labourers engineered to endure the deadly heat, toxins, and physical demands of Necromunda’s deepest industrial zones. Created by the hive’s tech-guilds as vat-grown workers, they were never intended to become a true political force. Over time, however, the Goliaths developed independence, culture, and leadership, eventually gaining recognition as a full Clan House. Their enhanced size and strength come from unstable helix modifications and stimulant regimes that shorten lifespan but create unmatched physical power. Goliath society celebrates brute resilience, personal challenge, and the belief that strength is proof of worth. They rule territories of foundries, forges, and furnace-levels where only the toughest can survive.
House Escher — Matriarchal Chem-Makers and Bio-Artisans
House Escher is a matriarchal Clan House descended from ancient trade guilds that specialized in chems, medicines, and exotic reagents. Over millennia, the Escher bloodline suffered a catastrophic genetic flaw that left almost all male offspring unstable, short-lived, or severely impaired. As a result, Escher society became dominated by fierce, agile, and highly skilled women who turned their mastery of chemical arts into a political and economic weapon. Their territories are filled with alchemical workshops, gene-labs, venom gardens, and stimulant forges that export goods throughout the hive. Eschers value speed, precision, and elegance in warfare, combining specialised drugs, biotechnology, and agile combat styles to maintain their influence and independence within Hive Primus.
House Orlock — The Iron House of Miners and Industrial Workers
House Orlock is known as the House of Iron, descended from the massive miner guilds and ore-refining clans that helped shape Necromunda’s industrial heartlands. Their wealth and power come from controlling huge ferrous slag pits, mineral rights, and vital transportation routes feeding the hive’s factories. Historically, Orlock workers were tough, practical, and fiercely loyal to their labour clans, traits that shaped the modern House. Their society values reliability, honour, and hard-earned skill, with many gangers trained from youth to repair machinery, protect convoys, and fight off raiders or saboteurs. Orlock gangs combine grit with a straightforward, no-nonsense fighting style, reflecting their origins among workers who spent generations surviving hazardous extraction zones and industrial strife.
House Van Saar — Masters of Technology and the Mysterious STC Fragment
House Van Saar is the wealthiest and most technologically advanced Clan House, owing its prosperity to a partially functioning Standard Template Construct (STC) fragment discovered long ago. This rare technology allows the Van Saar to produce exceptionally high-quality weapons, armour, power systems, and technical goods far superior to typical hive-made equipment. However, the STC is damaged, and long-term exposure to its radiation slowly harms Van Saar citizens, requiring them to wear specialised bodysuits and rely on life-support systems. Their society centres on precision, discipline, and technological mastery, and their gangs fight with methodical strategy and superior equipment. Other Houses respect and fear them, knowing Van Saar power rests on knowledge few dare challenge.
House Cawdor — Scavengers, Puritans, and Keepers of the Redemption Faith
House Cawdor descends from Necromunda’s vast networks of waste-processing, recycling, and salvage clans, who built their livelihoods by reclaiming what other Houses threw away. Over centuries, these clans absorbed the ardent doctrines of the Cult of the Redemption, transforming House Cawdor into a religious movement as much as a political force. Their members dress in masks, rags, and patchwork gear, symbolising purity through hardship and protection from both toxins and spiritual corruption. Cawdor culture emphasises penance, devotion, and the belief that sin must be burned away—literally, in many cases, as their gangs favour fire-based weaponry. Though often underestimated, Cawdor’s fanatic discipline and immense numbers make them a persistent and dangerous presence in the Underhive.
House Delaque — Spymasters and Shadow-Dealers of the Underhive
House Delaque’s origins are shrouded in secrecy, fitting for a lineage defined by espionage, infiltration, and information trading. Historically linked to data-guilds and covert operatives, Delaque rose to power by controlling intelligence networks throughout Hive Primus. Their pale skin, hairlessness, and preference for dim environments are attributed to generations spent in lightless zones and rumoured genetic modifications, though nothing is confirmed. Delaque society centres on manipulation, subtle coercion, and strategic planning rather than open warfare. Their gangs operate like covert cells, using stealth, silencers, ambushes, and psychological pressure to achieve their goals. Every House suspects Delaque of hidden agendas—usually correctly—making them both feared and indispensable within Necromunda’s political web.
