American Dad! Character Test

The IDRLabs American Dad! Character Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on deep analysis of the characters from the long-running animated series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Stan Smith

Stan is a hyper-patriotic, trigger-happy CIA agent who worships America, guns, and family values, usually in that order and often with alarming intensity. He will do absolutely anything—up to and including acts that could be classified as war crimes—to protect both his country and his idealized vision of suburban perfection. Beneath the macho swagger, rigid morality, and explosive temper is a deeply insecure man desperate to prove he’s a good husband, father, and patriot. His love for his family is real, even if his methods are catastrophic and wildly misguided. Stan embodies the chaotic overlap between devotion and delusion, showing how blind loyalty and genuine affection can coexist in one terrifyingly well-toned, deeply confused human being.

Steve Smith

Steve is a nerdy, awkward teenager bursting with hormones, pop-culture obsessions, and an unwavering belief that he is destined to be cool someday. He dreams of popularity, romance, and triumph while spending most of his time playing Dungeons & Dragons, singing show tunes at inappropriate moments, and blindly trusting his father’s unhinged advice. Despite constant humiliation from peers, family, and life itself, Steve remains endlessly hopeful, reinventing himself with every new scheme. His dramatic flair, misplaced confidence, and genuine sweetness make him a perfect caricature of adolescent cringe. Steve represents every painfully earnest teen who desperately wants to fit in while being spectacularly, hilariously bad at pretending he’s not a total nerd.

Roger

Roger is a sarcastic, hedonistic alien with the moral compass of a drunken raccoon and the wardrobe of an entire Broadway costume department. Living in the Smith attic, he cycles through elaborate disguises and personalities, each more chaotic and destructive than the last, using them to scam strangers, drink excessively, and indulge every impulsive whim. Roger’s selfishness is legendary, his appetite for drama infinite, and his tolerance for boredom nonexistent. Yet beneath all the depravity and emotional manipulation lies a lonely creature who secretly craves affection and stability, though he’d rather explode than admit it. Roger is a walking disaster wrapped in sequins, functioning as both the family’s greatest menace and its most strangely endearing wildcard.

Francine Smith

Francine is the picture-perfect suburban homemaker on the surface—sweet, supportive, and endlessly patient—but underneath lies the wild past of a chaotic party girl who never entirely disappeared. She bakes cookies, hosts gatherings, and keeps the household running smoothly, yet she’s fully capable of snapping into a cunning, manipulative, and occasionally violent force when pushed too far. Francine balances domestic grace with unpredictable ferocity, proving she’s far more complex than her cheerful exterior suggests. Her blend of maternal warmth and buried madness makes her both nurturing and terrifying. She embodies the idea that behind every seemingly flawless wife is someone who reinvented herself, but still carries the skills, secrets, and scars that once made her dangerous—and still can.

Hayley Smith

Hayley is an ultra-liberal, fiercely opinionated activist who throws herself into every cause with the enthusiasm of someone convinced she alone can save the world. She debates relentlessly, protests passionately, and defines herself by her opposition to her father—unless she accidentally agrees with him, in which case she changes the subject immediately. Though principled, Hayley is often hypocritical, frequently choosing boyfriends who contradict everything she claims to value, and occasionally resorting to violence when ideology fails. Despite her flaws, her compassion is genuine, and she truly wants to make the world better. Hayley represents every well-meaning idealist whose passion is admirable, whose execution is questionable, and whose moral certainty can be as exhausting as it is heartfelt.

Klaus Heisler

Klaus is a sarcastic, perpetually bitter goldfish containing the transplanted brain of an East German Olympic skier—a tragedy he reminds everyone of constantly. Trapped in a bowl and ignored by the family, he stews in jealousy, frustration, and unrequited love for Francine, forming elaborate revenge fantasies to cope with his endless humiliation. His dry wit, creepy flirtations, and inflated ego contrast hilariously with the absurdity of his tiny aquatic body. Klaus is a character defined by thwarted ambition and constant resentment, yet he clings stubbornly to the belief that he deserves better. He is the ultimate underdog who never gets a win, a self-important loser doomed to be the family’s overlooked punchline forever.

Jeff Fischer

Jeff is Hayley’s mellow, perpetually stoned husband whose laid-back nature makes him both lovable and profoundly confusing. He drifts through life with the blissful ease of someone who avoids stress by forgetting he has responsibilities at all. Kind-hearted and unfailingly polite, he rarely gets angry—unless someone threatens his van, his weed, or his chill vibe. Despite his simplicity, Jeff occasionally stumbles into moments of cosmic awareness, accidental wisdom, or literal extraterrestrial enlightenment, usually while profoundly high. His loyalty to Hayley is genuine, and his gentle nature balances her intensity. Jeff is the human equivalent of a friendly golden retriever, drifting through chaos with wide-eyed optimism and occasionally profound stoner-philosopher insight.
