Light Triad Test (LTS)
How strongly do you express the light side of human nature?
This test is based on the Light Triad Scale (LTS), developed by Scott Barry Kaufman, David Yaden, Elizabeth Hyde, and Emma Tsukayama in 2019. It measures the light triad of personality—a suite of prosocial traits capturing everyday orientation toward connection, authenticity, and goodwill.
A separate Light Triad Test approaches these same prosocial traits from a different angle.

For decades, psychological research on interpersonal traits focused heavily on the Dark Triad—Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. In 2019, psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman and his colleagues David Yaden, Elizabeth Hyde, and Emma Tsukayama introduced a deliberate counterweight: the Light Triad Scale (LTS). Rather than asking what makes people manipulative or callous, the researchers sought to operationalize the loving, prosocial side of human character. They developed a measure designed to capture everyday orientation toward genuine benevolence, warmth, and respect for others, establishing that the light side of personality is not merely the absence of dark traits, but a distinct and coherent psychological profile in its own right.
The LTS profiles three distinct yet interconnected facets of character. The first facet, Kantianism, reflects a commitment to treating people as ends in themselves rather than as means to an end. Named after the philosopher Immanuel Kant, high scorers on this trait value honesty, authenticity, and straightforward dealing, preferring genuine relationships over charm, manipulation, or strategic posturing. The second facet, Humanism, captures a core appreciation for the intrinsic dignity and worth of other human beings. People who score high in Humanism tend to celebrate the achievements of others, admire human potential, and treat every person as valuable. The third facet, Faith in Humanity, represents a fundamental trust in the goodness of others, characterized by the belief that most people are fair, well-intentioned, and deserving of trust.
Research conducted with the LTS indicates that a strong light triad profile is consistently associated with positive psychological outcomes. Individuals who score high across these facets tend to report greater life satisfaction, stronger feelings of self-transcendence, and higher levels of emotional empathy and compassion. They also report greater closeness in personal relationships, healthier interpersonal functioning, and a robust sense of purpose. Notably, studies show that light triad traits exist alongside dark triad traits in varying balances rather than on a simple single axis; most people demonstrate a mix of tendencies, though a predominant light orientation correlates strongly with prosocial behavior, psychological well-being, and genuine connection with others.
Alongside your individual facet scores and total score, the chart displays estimated comparison markers for a general population baseline. These population markers are estimates derived and rescaled from published research samples using the original LTS, rather than validated percentile norms or standardized rankings for this online version. They are included to provide a helpful point of reference for where scores in community samples typically cluster, helping you interpret how your reported tendencies align relative to broad research benchmarks.
It is important to remember that a higher score does not indicate moral superiority, nor does a lower score imply a character flaw. Personalities are complex, and individual responses to questions about trust and authenticity can fluctuate based on life experiences, social context, and current circumstances. The light triad profile provides a reflective snapshot of your present orientation toward others, serving as a tool for self-exploration and personal insight rather than a rigid judgment or permanent label.
This test is provided for educational and entertainment purposes only. It is not a diagnostic tool and does not constitute psychological or clinical assessment. The assessment is based on the Light Triad Scale (LTS), but it utilizes original items and is not affiliated with Scott Barry Kaufman, his co-authors, or their academic institutions. If you wish to explore your interpersonal patterns or emotional well-being further, consider engaging in self-reflection or speaking with a qualified professional.
