Sense of Mastery Test (PMS)

How much control do you feel over your life?

Developed by sociologists Leonard I. Pearlin and Carmi Schooler in 1978, the Pearlin Mastery Scale assesses the extent to which you see yourself as having personal control over the forces affecting your life.

Your sense of mastery influences how you navigate setbacks, manage stress, and pursue long-term goals. Do you feel in charge of your circumstances, or do life's challenges feel outside your control? To take the test, enter your input below.

The Pearlin Mastery Scale (PMS) was developed in 1978 by sociologists Leonard I. Pearlin and Carmi Schooler during their landmark investigation into the social origins of psychological distress. Pearlin and Schooler sought to discover why individuals exposed to comparable life hardships, professional challenges, and economic strains experience markedly different levels of emotional strain. Through extensive empirical research, they identified personal mastery—the enduring belief that one can actively influence and control the critical forces governing one's life—as a vital psychological resource that shields individuals from the harmful psychological and physiological consequences of persistent stress.

In psychological and sociological literature, a sense of mastery represents an overarching orientation toward personal agency, self-determination, and self-efficacy. Individuals who report a strong sense of mastery tend to perceive difficult situations as manageable problems that can be addressed through deliberate planning, adaptive coping, and focused effort. In contrast, those experiencing a lower sense of mastery often feel a pervasive sense of fatalism, powerlessness, or helplessness, believing that significant life events are largely dictated by luck, external authority, or uncontrollable circumstances rather than their own choices, abilities, and actions in the face of adversity.

The PMS captures this core psychological outlook through straightforward statements concerning how much influence you feel you have over your life circumstances and your capacity to resolve personal problems. Rather than assessing specialized technical skills or situational optimism, the instrument focuses on your fundamental conviction regarding personal autonomy. This internal framework strongly influences how you approach setbacks, navigate major life transitions, and sustain motivation when confronting complex challenges across career goals, health management, and interpersonal relationships over extended periods of time.

Decades of sociological and psychological research across diverse populations have affirmed the critical role of personal mastery in fostering long-term well-being and health. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that higher levels of mastery are associated with lower risks of anxiety and depressive symptoms, enhanced cardiovascular functioning, and greater emotional resilience among individuals dealing with chronic illness, socioeconomic hardship, or major life changes. Because mastery serves as an essential psychological buffer against chronic stress and burnout, evaluating your perceived control can illuminate your characteristic coping tendencies and psychological strengths.

When interpreting your scores, please note that the comparison markers displayed on the results chart are estimated benchmarks drawn from published academic samples and scientific literature. They do not constitute standardized population percentiles, absolute norms, or clinical cutoffs. Instead, these markers are provided solely to offer a meaningful educational frame of reference for understanding how your responses compare to typical patterns observed in sociological and psychological research studies.
