Undertale Test

The Undertale Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the video game. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Sans

Sans is a lazy, laid-back skeleton whose lowercase speech and casual attitude mask deep fatalism and knowledge of time resets. He appears to be a comic relief slacker, but he is observant, scientifically inclined, and possibly involved in advanced timeline research. Beneath this façade, Sans is weighed down by apathy and nihilism, often seeing effort as pointless. Yet he cares intensely about his brother and wider community, quietly honoring promises and shielding others from harsh truths. He represents the human struggle with burnout and hopelessness, continuing to care when he suspects his efforts will not matter. He hides seriousness behind humor and deflects vulnerability.

Alphys

Alphys is the royal scientist, a reptilian introvert with extraordinary technical talent and cripplingly low self-esteem. She is analytical and capable of sophisticated inventions, yet her past failures in experimental research leave her overwhelmed by guilt and insecurity. She often retreats into procrastination and avoidance, hiding behind her work and digital hobbies to escape the pressure of reality. Alphys desperately wants to be liked and to do right by her friends, but she struggles with the fear that she is a fraud. She represents the path from imposter syndrome to self-acceptance, slowly learning to be honest about her mistakes and her true self.

Undyne

Undyne is the hot-blooded, spear-wielding fish warrior who commands the Royal Guard. She acts quickly on her convictions, possesses immense physical strength, and is defined by a fierce sense of justice. While she initially pursues the protagonist as a relentless hunter, she also values honorable combat and fairness. Outside of battle, she mentors her friends with intense loyalty and enjoys anime, greasy food, and goofy pastimes. Her bravado masks deep insecurity and a tender heart, especially regarding her feelings for Alphys. Once blinded by prejudice against humans, she learns to confront her biases, proving that even the most stubborn warriors can grow through mercy.

Flowey

Flowey the Flower is a soulless, manipulative entity who hides a nihilistic worldview behind a cheerful, folksy facade. Created from a golden flower injected with determination, he possesses the power to reset time but lacks the capacity for love or empathy. He initially attempts to help others, but his inability to feel connection eventually leads him to treat the world as a cruel experiment. He is driven by boredom, curiosity, and a twisted desire to prove that mercy is meaningless. Though he often acts as an antagonist, his behavior reveals a deep, buried longing for the companionship he lost, making him a tragic figure of emotional numbness.

Mettaton

Mettaton is a charismatic, hyper-dramatic robot entertainer whose brand saturates the Underground. Outwardly, he is glamorous, confident, and egotistical, centering his existence around his public image. He initially plays the role of a killing machine to challenge the protagonist, but he eventually reveals that he loves humanity and was staging danger to claim a human soul, hoping to act as a savior. Beneath the vanity, he cares deeply about his impact and his friends, including his cousin Napstablook and Alphys. He represents the struggle of performance as identity, the chase for external validation, and the cost of constant self-marketing.

Papyrus

Papyrus is a flamboyant, loud, and self-proclaimed skeleton who dreams of joining the Royal Guard to become popular and beloved. Outwardly, he is brash, confident, and obsessed with his own coolness, building elaborate puzzles and boasting about his future fame. In reality, Papyrus is hardworking, kind, forgiving, and deeply lonely, yearning for friendship and validation more than glory. His faith in others is so strong that he interprets insults as awkward self-sabotage rather than genuine dislike. He embodies the desire to be seen and the way people overcompensate with loudness and striving when they feel invisible. His booming ego is a mask for insecurity.

Toriel

Toriel is a kind, intelligent former queen who becomes a protective mother figure to humans who fall into the Ruins. She rescues the protagonist, teaches them puzzles, and bakes butterscotch and snail pies to shield them from the dangers of the Underground. Beneath her soft, formal manner, she can be stern and intimidating when enforcing boundaries or opposing dangerous plans. Her hidden core is rooted in grief and guilt after losing her children, which leads her to be overprotective and distrustful of the outside world. She represents the tension between care and control, loving so fiercely that she struggles to let others grow.

Asgore

Asgore Dreemurr is a large, goatlike monster who combines jolliness with profound sadness. He speaks in friendly Southern slang, tends gardens of golden flowers, and makes tea for his guests. Monsters respect him as a powerful leader, but he is fundamentally warmhearted rather than sharp-witted. After the deaths of his children, he declared he would kill any human who fell underground, a war policy he now deeply regrets. He feels miserable about the lives he has taken, and his guilt extends to destroying his own mercy button. He is blinded by overwhelming selflessness, willing to stain his hands if it provides his people hope.
