The Voltron: Legendary Defender Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the animated series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Shiro

Shiro is a battle-scarred commander who serves as the moral center and primary mentor for the team. Outwardly, he is calm, strategic, and decisive, stepping up to lead whenever others panic. He is fiercely protective, often prioritizing the safety of his crew over rigid military protocol. Beneath this composed exterior, Shiro struggles with severe trauma from his time as a prisoner of the Galra Empire. He frequently battles intrusive memories and a deep-seated fear that he is fundamentally broken or replaceable. He is motivated by duty and loyalty, constantly working to reconcile his heavy sense of responsibility with his own need for healing.

Keith

Keith is the archetypal lone wolf with a hero’s heart, a hot-headed prodigy who trusts his instincts and throws himself into danger first, thinking about feelings later. He is blunt, competitive, and intensely pragmatic, more comfortable acting on a gut read of a situation than patiently talking things through. His impulsiveness and rebellious streak make him brilliant in crisis but difficult in diplomacy. Beneath this, Keith is deeply self-conscious and afraid of abandonment. He keeps people at arm’s length to avoid rejection and quietly views his mentors as figures he can never quite live up to. He ultimately finds strength in his identity.

Hunk

Hunk is the big-hearted engineer whose initial reluctance and anxiety mask a powerful, protective instinct and deep practical intelligence. At the start of his journey, he is nervous and prefers the comfort of home over the dangers of a galactic war. However, witnessing the suffering of the enslaved Balmerans transforms his fear into a steady, unwavering determination to defend the oppressed. He acts as the emotional anchor for his team, providing necessary reality checks and comfort during their most difficult moments. While he remains cautious and values safety, he consistently steps up to protect those he loves, proving that true strength comes from compassion.

Allura

Allura is the exiled queen and paladin-commander who carries the weight of a lost civilization while striving to uphold her father’s legacy. She is a driven, altruistic leader who channels her grief into a relentless pursuit of justice against the Galra Empire. Her core strength is her unwavering commitment to the mission, yet she is often hindered by the deep-seated prejudices she harbors toward those she views as oppressors. While she initially struggles to reconcile her desire for vengeance with the need for diplomacy, she eventually learns to embrace her team as family, proving that she can lead with both iron resolve and profound compassion.

Pidge

Pidge is the intrepid hacker-researcher of the team, a sharp-tongued tech prodigy whose curiosity and drive for truth override most social niceties. Small and physically unassuming, she compensates with intellect, sarcasm, and a deep love of machines. She bonds more easily with robots than people and treats data as the most reliable source of reality. She is rebellious, stubborn, and willing to risk everything to chase evidence that her missing family is still alive. Beneath her prickly exterior, Pidge craves connection. She eventually learns to balance her obsessive focus on personal missions with the messy, rewarding warmth of her chosen family.

Coran

Coran is the eccentric guardian, outwardly comic and dramatic yet fundamentally a cautious, knowledgeable, and deeply loyal royal advisor who functions as Allura’s second father and the team’s space-uncle. He takes his duty to protect Allura and uphold King Alfor’s legacy with utmost seriousness, monitoring her health, warning her about risks, and sometimes trying to reign in her self-sacrificial impulses. In most other situations he is theatrical and goofy, providing much of the show’s comic relief, but this silliness masks impressive competence with alien technology, tactics, and lore. Underneath the jokes, Coran carries his own profound grief over the loss of Altea.

Lance

Lance is the class clown with a hero complex, a swaggering sharpshooter who masks deep-seated insecurity with jokes, flirting, and a carefully maintained cool-guy persona. Initially, he is immature, arrogant, and confrontational, turning every situation into a competition while he chases glory and imagines himself the best pilot. His bravado exists because he fears invisibility and constantly compares himself to his teammates. When he feels truly valued, he drops the act to reveal serious focus and tactical awareness. He is a character who oscillates between loud extroversion and quiet self-doubt, ultimately driven by a sincere desire for belonging and affection.

Lotor

Lotor is the charismatic anti-idealistic prince who positions himself as the enlightened alternative to his tyrant father while hiding a ruthless, obsessive core. Publicly, he disavows the Galra Empire’s rule by fear and claims to favor loyalty and mutual benefit, often using charm and psychological manipulation to win trust. Beneath that, he is an opportunist with tightly controlled emotions who erupts into instability when cornered. He is desperate to be seen as separate from his parents and worthy of existence on his own terms. Ultimately, he believes his vision of peace is justified, blinded by trauma and an inability to trust anyone fully.
