Kaneda

His loud bravado and sarcastic humor often mask a deeper, protective instinct, especially toward childhood friends in crisis. Even when overwhelmed by forces beyond his control, he confronts escalating threats head-on, proving that his rebellious spirit is driven by genuine devotion rather than mere delinquency.

Tetsuo Shima

Tetsuo Shima is an insecure motorcycle gang member whose sudden psychic awakening turns long-buried resentment into an uncontrollable power trip. Accustomed to being rescued and overshadowed by his stronger peers, he is driven by a desperate need to prove he is no longer weak. He handles conflict through reckless escalation, rejecting guidance and viewing even well-meaning protection as an insult. Beneath his volatile rage and hunger for dominance, however, lies a wounded underdog terrified of his own vulnerability. He seeks absolute power to command respect and escape feeling inferior, yet his obsession with being untouchable ultimately consumes his identity from the inside out.

Colonel Shikishima

Colonel Shikishima is a disciplined military commander who takes personal responsibility for protecting Neo-Tokyo from catastrophe. He oversees the secret psychic project and watches over the gifted children, viewing strict order and rigorous preparedness as the only defenses against total destruction. When civilian leaders stall in debate or ignore looming threats, he bypasses slow procedures and seizes direct control. He is demanding, unyielding, and quick to rely on military command, yet his harsh authority stems from a genuine duty to shield the city rather than a desire for power. He steps forward during emergencies, shouldering heavy burdens alone even when decisive action alienates others.

Kaori

Kaori is a timid, compassionate young woman whose devotion to Tetsuo provides an anchor of gentle humanity amidst Neo-Tokyo's chaos. Quiet and conflict-averse, she avoids personal ambition or rebellion, choosing instead to offer unconditional emotional support to the person she cares about. Her core motive is simple relational loyalty: she stays by Tetsuo's side even when he grows distant, reckless, and terrifyingly powerful. Kaori's central contradiction lies in her deep steadfastness paired with complete vulnerability. Though she possesses the courage to remain close to someone in agony, her quiet tenderness cannot shield her from the overwhelming, destructive forces of a violent world she cannot control.

Kei

Kei is a dedicated resistance fighter who challenges Neo-Tokyo's corrupt authority through strategic action and deep moral conviction. She values careful planning over reckless bravado and keeps her emotional guard up around new acquaintances. When drawn into the conflict surrounding secret government experiments, she confronts dangerous institutions directly rather than standing by. Although fiercely independent and wary of reckless allies like Kaneda, she gradually opens up and risks her life for a shared cause. Even when chosen as a psychic conduit by the Espers, she maintains her internal resolve, balancing personal agency with the heavy demands of a larger fight for justice.

Kiyoko

Kiyoko is a frail, bedridden Esper whose precognitive visions give her profound insight into Neo-Tokyo's impending destruction. Confined to government care and physically dependent on her fellow psychics, she guides events from the sidelines rather than entering physical battles. She treats gut feelings of danger as urgent alerts, sharing warnings to prevent catastrophic loss. Kiyoko’s contradiction lies in her hidden influence: though physically helpless, her psychic guidance and communication through mediums make her a pivotal decision-maker. She carries the emotional burden of foreseeing devastation, intervening from behind the scenes even when trying to avert disaster sets dangerous events in motion.
