His defining traits are sarcasm, stubbornness, and a guarded loyalty. He moshes enthusiastically at shows and always wants to go when challenged, but he would rather die than admit he cares. His relationship with Amy Andrews reveals hidden softness and anxiety, especially regarding his own masculinity. He hides his vulnerability behind jokes and eye-rolling, a dynamic familiar to people who use humor as armor.

Nick Andopolis

Nick Andopolis is the sweet, spacey dreamer of the freaks, a friendly, mild-mannered burnout whose life revolves around his drum kit and vague rock-star fantasies. A former basketball player, he now drifts between basement jams and intense, unfocused crushes. His key traits are warmth, neediness, and delusional optimism about his musical talent; he plays elaborate drum solos for anyone who will listen, often oblivious to the secondhand embarrassment he causes. Underneath, Nick is a boy desperate for validation in a house dominated by his strict father. He tends to avoid confrontation, preferring to retreat into his imagination when facing reality or criticism.

Neal Schweiber

Neal Schweiber is the self-proclaimed comic genius of the McKinley High geeks. He is outgoing, talkative, and constantly hungry for the spotlight. He loves performing impressions, fast-talking his way through social situations, and acting as the resident expert on every topic. His defining traits are bravado, a desperate need for attention, and a genuine capacity for care toward his friends. Beneath his performative confidence lies a deep fear of rejection and a fragile sense of self. When his family life begins to fracture, he struggles to process his vulnerability, often using sarcasm and humor as a shield to hide his pain.

Daniel Desario

Daniel Desario is the archetypal charismatic burnout who navigates high school by leaning on his charm, sharp wit, and a carefully maintained facade of indifference. As a natural leader among the freaks, he uses his magnetic personality to deflect from his academic struggles and deep-seated insecurities about his future. He is perpetually at odds with authority figures, viewing rigid rules as personal affronts designed to keep him in his place. While he often acts as though he does not care about anything, he is fiercely loyal to his inner circle. Beneath his rebellious exterior lies a vulnerable kid who feels written off by the world.

Sam Weir

Sam Weir is the sensitive, idealistic heart of the freshman geek circle. Bill Haverchuck is the geekiest of the geek gang, defined by his lanky frame, thick glasses, and unpretentious nature. His defining traits are vulnerability, resilience, and deadpan wit; he endures bullying, chronic health problems, and social exclusion with a mixture of sadness and hard-won acceptance. He masks his deep loneliness with television, snacks, and sardonic commentary. While he typically avoids confrontation, he occasionally shows true spine when his friends are threatened.
