Beneath this disciplined exterior lies a deep, hidden longing for connection and a fierce devotion to their leader, Kongō-sensei. They fear failing in their role, eventually pushing themselves to the point of destruction to protect others.

Diamond

Diamond is the radiant golden child of the gem society, known for being beautiful, kind, and deeply admired by their peers. They fight with bravery and invent creative combat methods, yet their large crystalline structure makes them ironically fragile and prone to shattering. Diamond harbors a secret, intense inferiority complex toward their partner, Bort, feeling constantly overshadowed despite their own efforts to be useful. This deep-seated resentment and a desperate craving for validation eventually distort their sweet persona. Diamond represents the struggle of the people-pleaser who lives in constant comparison, unable to accept their own strengths until their suppressed envy finally boils over.

Cinnabar

Cinnabar is a self-exiled night watchman whose poisonous body and sharp mind leave them convinced they are a curse rather than a comrade. Their form constantly emits a toxic mercury cloud that corrodes other gems, forcing them to patrol the island alone in the darkness. Despite their formidable combat skills, they openly voice a desire to disappear, viewing their existence as a burden to others. Beneath this aloof exterior lies a deep, hidden longing for connection and purpose. They cling to a fragile promise of change, revealing a complex capacity for both intense loyalty and self-protective bitterness when their isolation is finally challenged.

Kongo-sensei

Kongo-sensei is the weary guardian monk who serves as the paternal figure for the Lustrous. He acts as a teacher, protector, and father to the genderless gemstones, guiding them through their daily lives while defending them from the Lunarians. Beneath his calm and meditative exterior lies a heavy secret: he is a sophisticated prayer machine designed to guide souls to nirvana, a function he refuses to perform because he cannot bear to abandon his children. He struggles to balance his original duty with his personal attachments, often choosing to withhold the truth to maintain group harmony and protect those he loves from the crushing reality of their existence.

Bort

Bort is the cold, hyper-competent protector who believes only ruthless strength can keep their fragile family alive. As a black diamond with exceptional hardness, they are the most durable and arguably strongest fighter among the gems. They are calm yet ruthless in combat, often volunteering for the most dangerous missions and crushing Lunarians with single-minded focus. Bort sees value almost purely in utility, often dismissing emotional concerns as liabilities. While they appear emotionless and pragmatic, their harsh criticism of others is rooted in deep protectiveness and a fear of loss. They cope with chaos by becoming an uncompromising, results-oriented guardian.

Rutile

Rutile is the eccentric battlefield surgeon who serves as the indispensable medic for the gem community. They possess a sharp tongue and a snide demeanor, yet they work tirelessly through the night to reassemble their shattered comrades. Their identity is anchored in their medical expertise, and they view every patient as a project requiring their specific intervention. Rutile harbors a deep, obsessive devotion to Padparadscha, constantly inventing and testing new parts to keep their partner active. This caregiving role masks a fragile ego; they react with intense resentment when their authority is challenged or when their help is deemed unnecessary, revealing a desperate need to be needed.

Phosphophyllite

Phosphophyllite is a naive, attention-seeking misfit who slowly transforms into a traumatized seeker of truth willing to shatter the world for an answer. Initially, they are childish, lazy, and distractible, often seen as useless due to their low hardness and constant breakage. Their desperate drive to be helpful pushes them into dangerous roles and erratic projects. As they lose body parts and gain new ones, their personality hardens into a volatile, strategic force. Beneath their early comic ineptitude lies a deep well of empathy, yet they eventually become consumed by vengeance and a desire to force enlightenment on everyone, losing their original self in the process.
