The Rising of the Shield Hero Test

The IDRLabs Shield Hero Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the anime series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Itsuki Kawasumi

He struggles to accept criticism or acknowledge his own fallibility, often rewriting narratives to preserve his image. Beneath his composed exterior lies a desperate fear of being ordinary, leading him to control others to validate his own worth.

Raphtalia

Raphtalia is a traumatized survivor who evolves into a steadfast swordswoman and the moral anchor of her party. After losing her parents and enduring the horrors of slavery, she carries deep scars and a lingering sense of survivor's guilt. She channels this pain into fierce loyalty toward the Shield Hero, viewing herself as his sword and protector. While she projects the image of a model heroine—brave, kind, and dutiful—she often suppresses her own needs and fears to remain strong for others. Her journey is a struggle to transform past abuse into protective love while grappling with the temptation of vengeance and self-doubt.

Malty S Melromarc / Myne

Malty S Melromarc is a calculated predator who hides a sadistic nature behind a facade of charm and royal grace. As the first princess of Melromarc, she weaponizes her status to ruin those she deems obstacles, most notably triggering the Shield Hero’s downfall through elaborate lies and false accusations. She thrives on chaos, manipulating the gullible and exploiting social hierarchies to satisfy her own entitlement. While she possesses no genuine empathy, she is highly skilled at mimicking warmth to secure power. Her actions consistently reveal a deep-seated lack of remorse, as she views other people merely as tools for her amusement or advancement.

Filo

Filo is a chaotic force of nature who balances childlike innocence with formidable, bird-like power. Hatched from an egg and raised by the Shield Hero, she grows rapidly into a loyal companion who finds pure joy in simple pleasures like pulling a wagon, singing for crowds, and eating delicious food. Despite her playful and impulsive demeanor, she possesses an uncanny ability to see through the dishonest intentions of others, often acting as a blunt moral compass for her found family. Though she is frequently underestimated as a pet, she remains a fierce protector who will not hesitate to kick enemies through walls to defend those she loves.

Naofumi Iwatani

Naofumi Iwatani is a cynical protector whose natural empathy was buried under layers of betrayal and systemic injustice. Originally an easygoing student, he was shattered when he was falsely accused and stripped of his status as a hero. As the Shield Hero, he is forced into a role that prevents him from attacking, requiring him to rely on strategy, logistics, and ruthless pragmatism to survive. He uses sarcasm and a guarded demeanor to keep others at a distance, yet he quietly nurtures his chosen family. His journey is a struggle to rebuild trust and do good in a world that insists he is a villain.

Motoyasu Kitamura

Motoyasu Kitamura is a charismatic but catastrophically gullible adventurer who weaponizes a shallow sense of chivalry to feel heroic without understanding the consequences of his actions. As the Spear Hero, he surrounds himself with an all-female party and uncritically accepts the false narratives fed to him by those he deems beautiful. He views the world through a lens of performative justice, often causing significant harm to others while remaining convinced of his own righteousness. His fixation on idealized figures and his deep-seated need for validation make him easily manipulated, yet he possesses a capacity for growth once his illusions are finally shattered.

Ren Amaki

Ren Amaki is the aloof gamer-prodigy who hides deep insecurity behind a mask of cool detachment. As the Sword Hero, he treats the world like a familiar VRMMO, prioritizing power progression and individual glory over the messy realities of his new environment. He projects a loner persona to avoid vulnerability, but this isolation leads to critical failures in communication and coordination. When his detached choices cause real-world harm, he struggles to accept responsibility, initially blaming others to shield his fragile ego. Through the guidance of his allies, he eventually learns that true strength requires humility, accountability, and the courage to value people over stats.
