The Gaslight District Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the animated series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Melancholy "Mel" Hill

Melancholy "Mel" Hill is a reckless, morbidly playful mafia princess who hides a catastrophic secret: she is the last human in a city of immortal corpses. She projects herself as a gleefully sadistic gangster, masking her deep-seated insecurities with chaotic bravado and increasingly dangerous stunts. While she craves the respect of her found family, she often feels stifled by their attempts to protect her from the truth of her own existence. Mel is defined by a desperate hunger for belonging and a surprising capacity for guilt. She balances a manic, thrill-seeking exterior with a genuine, aching need to be seen as a capable adult.

Ken the Butcher

Ken the Butcher is a gruff, overworked mob patriarch who runs the Smiling Dead with an iron fist. He functions as both a business owner and a neighborhood warlord, constantly balancing the demands of his criminal enterprise with the desperate need to protect his daughter, Mel. His defining traits are ferocious protectiveness, a volatile temper, and a grim, professional mindset. Ken is a man of contradictions; his love for his family is both their salvation and their prison. He keeps Mel sheltered to hide her identity, yet this overprotectiveness denies her the agency she craves. He handles fear by clamping down, demanding total control.

Mud

Mud is the family’s greasy opportunist, serving as the Smiling Dead’s gunman and accountant while constantly hunting for his next grift. He is a classic slimeball rogue who delights in violence and betrayal, yet he remains deeply tethered to his criminal family. He steals from the register and schemes behind Ken’s back, but he also offers genuine, if warped, advice and support to his kin. His defining contradiction is that he is a chronic backstabber who nonetheless deeply needs the people he cheats. Mud masks his underlying insecurity and fear of abandonment with caustic humor, sarcasm, and selfish gambits to maintain a sense of independence.

Breadhead

Breadhead is the hulking, bread-headed enforcer for the Smiling Dead who balances terrifying physical power with a surprisingly gentle and innocent demeanor. He functions as the crew’s loyal tank, finding genuine comfort in simple, predictable tasks and the warmth of his found family. While he is capable of extreme violence, he views his actions through a lens of childlike obedience rather than malice, often failing to question the ethics of the orders he receives. He possesses a rich, hidden inner life, frequently expressing his emotions through music and piano playing. His primary motivation is maintaining connection and harmony within his circle, even when those bonds lead him into dangerous or morally questionable situations.

Diligence

Diligence is the relentless leader of the Virtues, serving as a cold, bureaucratic enforcer who prioritizes institutional mission over individual lives. They embody the archetype of the zealot, viewing the world through a rigid lens of order and divine prophecy. While others in the Gaslight District scramble for meaning or survival, Diligence remains detached, viewing the immortal Rotlings as mere obstacles to be cleared. Their cruelty is not a byproduct of passion but a calculated tool of authority. They possess an unwavering commitment to their goals, refusing to negotiate or show empathy, ultimately representing the dangerous intersection of absolute power and moral indifference.

Angel Mother

Angel Mother is a cold, cosmic entity who views the world through the lens of divine prophecy rather than human connection. As a massive, sentient bird and the progenitor of angels, she represents an uncaring, institutional authority that demands total compliance. Her primary motive is to secure the prophesied human, Mel, to trigger the destruction of the Rotlings. She is defined by a chilling detachment, treating her own kin as disposable tools to be manipulated or sacrificed. While others in the District struggle with messy, emotional loyalties, she remains a terrifying force of nature, prioritizing absolute, predestined order over the lives of those beneath her.
