Jivi Flask is a resilient runaway sailor and captive who strives to protect his peers from a position of near-total powerlessness. Driven by a deep need for justice, he comforts fellow prisoners and risks his own safety to orchestrate desperate escapes. His main contradiction lies in his intense self-loathing; he views himself as a compromised survivor and a potential thief, even as his actions prove him to be remarkably noble. He deeply distrusts corrupt institutions and established authority figures, preferring to rely on his peers. Though haunted by survivor's guilt and fear, he stubbornly refuses to abandon his moral compass in a brutal world.

Mathis Quigley

Mathis Quigley is a morally compromised mercenary mage who sells his magical skills to questionable employers to survive. He works for brutal slavers to support his blind son, Matty. However, he is haunted by the fact that he betrayed his own wife to the secret police. He uses sharp sarcasm and a prickly attitude to hide his deep guilt and exhaustion. Though he is a highly skilled spellwright, he prefers quiet survival and flight over heroic rebellion. He is a deeply flawed father who makes terrible mistakes. Still, he refuses to abandon his child. He struggles to balance his instinct for self-preservation with his genuine, buried love for his family.

Sette Frummagem

Sette Frummagem is a loud-mouthed criminal princess and street urchin who weaponizes her charm to survive. She is the lion-tailed daughter of a powerful crime boss. She spends her days lying, cheating, and fighting dirty to prove her worth to her family. She fiercely resists authority figures and mocks anyone who tries to control her. Yet, beneath her boastful grifter bravado lies a deep contradiction. She possesses a fierce loyalty and a growing sense of compassion that she tries hard to hide. She masks her fears with aggressive humor. She will risk everything to protect her close companions, even as she struggles to escape her family's corrupt legacy.

Duane Adelier

Duane Adelier is an undead spellwright and priest who strives to maintain his rigid moral principles and polite manners while guarding a young companion. He deeply desires to atone for past military atrocities and protect the innocent. Matty Quigley Jr. is a blind eight-year-old boy who serves as the gentle moral heart of his dangerous world. He navigates his treacherous surroundings using Chitz, an enchanted toy that grants him sight. Despite losing his mother to state violence and knowing his father's deep moral flaws, he remains remarkably optimistic and forgiving. He constantly fusses over the physical well-being of his companions and tries to smooth over arguments with gentle conciliation. His childlike sweetness masks a surprisingly mature, clear-eyed understanding of adult failures and family betrayal. He chooses kindness and curiosity over bitterness, holding onto hope even when surrounded by grim, violent daily realities.

Uaid

Uaid is a towering, three-story pymaric ogre construct built to serve a rebel cause, yet he functions primarily as a gentle guardian and quiet emotional anchor for his companions. Though designed as a massive weapon of war, his core motive is to protect and support those he loves, especially young Matty, whom he treats like a younger brother. He responds faithfully to the guidance of his allies, offering silent, unwavering strength without needing words. His main contradiction lies in his immense, destructive physical power paired with a deeply nurturing, protective nature. He chooses loyalty and quiet care over mindless violence.
