Sentaro Kawabuchi is a physically imposing high school student widely feared as a rough delinquent, though he is actually a passionate jazz drummer with a generous, sensitive heart. As a mixed-race outsider, he struggles with deep-seated feelings of abandonment and guilt. He uses loud laughter and a tough exterior to mask his intense loneliness. While he rebels against school rules, he remains fiercely loyal to his close friends and mentors. In moments of conflict, he reacts impulsively and physically. However, when emotional pain or guilt becomes too heavy, his instinct is to run away and isolate himself to avoid burdening the people he loves.

Yurika Fukahori

Yurika Fukahori is a wealthy art student who rejects her privileged upbringing in search of a freer, more authentic life. She appears to be a refined, sheltered young woman, but she possesses a fierce, independent streak. She rejects the safe path her family expects. Instead, she gravitates toward the raw world of jazz and political activism. In relationships, she is decisive and emotionally demanding. She confronts her partners directly when they try to hide their feelings or push her away. She is willing to risk her social standing and financial security for genuine love and artistic ideals. Her greatest fear is a comfortable, gilded confinement.

Junichi Katsuragi

Junichi Katsuragi is a charismatic older trumpeter and mentor who inspires younger musicians but struggles with deep personal disillusionment. He holds himself to high ethical standards, yet his past involvement in radical student protests leaves him burdened by guilt and failure. He drifts between creative pursuits, political activism, and poverty, unable to find a stable place in the world. When relationships become intense, his instinct is to withdraw and push others away to protect them from his chaotic life. Despite his self-sacrificing avoidance, he possesses a raw, magnetic talent that draws people to him. He must learn to accept support and believe he is worthy of love and stability.

Kaoru Nishimi

Kaoru Nishimi is a cerebral honor student and classical piano prodigy who struggles to connect with others. He copes with a history of constant moving by clinging to rigid academic routines and sharp, defensive logic. Although he deeply craves meaningful relationships, he instinctively withdraws or pushes people away when he feels threatened or insecure. His life changes when he discovers the messy freedom of jazz music and forms intense, life-changing friendships. This bond forces him to trade his safe classical scores for emotional risk-taking. Though he still tends to run away when overwhelmed, his loyalty and love for his friends always pull him back to the music.

Tsutomu Mukae

Tsutomu Mukae is the gentle owner of Welcome Records and a double-bass player who provides a musical sanctuary for local youth. He welcomes misfit teenagers into his basement without judgment, treating delinquents and honor students alike as fellow musicians. Though he maintains a respectable business, he quietly encourages his daughter's unconventional friendships and the rebellious energy of jazz. He resolves conflicts with calm pragmatism, offering practical support and a warm meal instead of lecturing people on their mistakes. Motivated by a deep love for his community, he remains a steady, reassuring anchor even when the lives of those around him descend into chaos.

Ritsuko Mukae

Ritsuko Mukae is the warm, dependable class representative and the welcoming poster girl of her family's jazz record shop. She acts as the emotional anchor for her small circle of friends. She quietly supports the passions of others and works hard to keep her group united. Her core motive is to maintain harmony. However, her deep-seated desire to avoid conflict often leads her to swallow her own hurt. She hides her romantic feelings and personal anxieties behind a cheerful smile. Instead of confronting people directly, she prefers to write down her thoughts. She must learn to claim her own happiness rather than always putting others first.
