Initially Uther’s ward, she is known for her courage and defiance of the king’s cruelty toward those with magic. Her core contradiction is that she longs for safety and justice but increasingly believes the only way to achieve them is through domination and revenge. She handles conflict through open confrontation and long-term plotting, eventually seizing Camelot to prove her worth. Her journey illustrates how systemic oppression and unaddressed trauma can curdle empathy into bitterness.

Lancelot

Lancelot is an earnest, self-effacing commoner whose relentless honor and capacity for sacrifice make him Camelot’s purest knight and one of Merlin’s only true equals. He is not noble by birth, yet he possesses a natural nobility of spirit that transcends social status. He forges documents to pass as a knight because he believes duty is defined by actions rather than titles. When exposed, he accepts banishment without protest, proving his commitment to his code over his own comfort. He is the first to learn Merlin’s magical secret and immediately affirms its goodness, offering the validation and equal friendship that Merlin desperately craves.

Arthur Pendragon

Arthur Pendragon is a proud, competitive warrior-prince who learns to turn inherited power into earned, compassionate leadership. He begins as an arrogant golden boy obsessed with status and honor, yet he possesses a hidden capacity for empathy that eventually defines his rule. His central contradiction is the struggle between his duty to follow his father’s rigid laws and his growing desire to create a more just, inclusive kingdom. He handles conflict through direct action and confrontation, often burying his own vulnerabilities beneath a veneer of toughness. Over time, he learns to trust others, proving that true strength lies in vulnerability and the courage to change.

Gwen

Gwen is a compassionate, quietly steel-spined servant who grows into a grounded, widely loved queen, proving that true nobility is about character rather than birth. The daughter of a blacksmith, she begins as a maid known for her warmth, practicality, and loyalty. Her honesty cuts through Arthur’s entitlement, and this moral courage is what first attracts him. Merlin

He is the show’s world-weary mentor, full of arcane knowledge, cautious counsel, and a tendency to sigh before bailing Merlin out of trouble. Underneath his stoic exterior lies guilt and compromise.
