The Monster Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Kenzou Tenma

Eva Heinemann is the director’s daughter and Tenma’s ex-fiancée, initially defined by her elitist belief that not all lives are equal. Her early life is anchored in status, wealth, and a desperate need for male approval, leading her to discard Tenma when his career falters. Following her father’s death, she spirals into alcoholism and profound loneliness, becoming a three-time divorcee. Her journey is a striking redemption arc, moving from a manipulative narcissist to a woman who confronts her own inner darkness. She eventually finds courage, shedding her vanity to oppose Johan. Eva represents the painful, messy process of self-destruction and the possibility of finding humanity through atonement.

Wolfgang Grimmer

Wolfgang Grimmer is a perpetually smiling former East German spy and Kinderheim 511 survivor who now travels as a freelance journalist. He radiates kindness and awkward warmth, yet he calmly admits that he barely feels emotions and often mimics appropriate reactions due to childhood conditioning. His defining contradiction is the gap between his gentle demeanor and his dissociative alter ego, The Magnificent Steiner, a hyper-violent protector that emerges under extreme duress. Grimmer roams Europe trying to rediscover his capacity to feel and to confront those who turned children into weapons. He believes in the inherent goodness of others, embodying resilience and the long road back from dehumanization.

Heinrich Lunge

Heinrich Lunge is a near-mythic detective of the BKA defined by cold logic, total workaholism, and an obsessive need to close every case he takes on. His trademark gesture of moving his fingers as if typing in midair reflects his prodigious memory, as he imagines recording every detail into an internal database. Initially, he fixates on Tenma as the only rational suspect, pursuing him for years while ignoring evidence of Johan’s involvement. Beneath his robotic demeanor, he is terrified of acknowledging his own mistakes. His late-life evolution toward humility and reconnecting with his daughter shows a capacity for change that was long buried under professional arrogance.

Johan Liebert

Johan Liebert is a soft-spoken, beautiful young man whose angelic demeanor hides one of anime’s most chillingly controlled, philosophical villains. He is a nihilistic mastermind who manipulates others into murder and suicide while questioning whether he himself truly exists. Born from a eugenics project, he orchestrates tragedies to prove that life is meaningless and that death is the only equalizer. His duality is his defining contradiction: he is outwardly charming and courteous, yet inwardly cold and detached. While he appears to be a monster without a soul, his obsession with his sister and his search for identity reveal a deeply wounded child yearning for validation.

Franz Bonaparta

Franz Bonaparta is the architect of the series' deepest horrors, a psychiatrist and author whose cold intellectual experiments birthed the nihilism of Johan Liebert. He operates from a position of detached curiosity, viewing children as blank slates for his eugenics projects and psychological conditioning. His defining contradiction is the gap between his clinical, systemic cruelty and his later, quiet life as a hotelier who shows flashes of genuine, if belated, regret. While he understands the darkness he fostered, he remains fundamentally committed to his theories about human nature. He represents the danger of treating people as mere data points in an abstract, destructive pursuit of knowledge.

Nina Liebert

Nina Liebert is a resilient and compassionate woman whose life as a law student is shattered when she discovers her suppressed past as the twin sister of a serial killer. She embodies the struggle to reclaim one's identity after experiencing profound trauma and dissociation. While she initially faces her brother with a desire for vengeance, she eventually chooses a path of healing and forgiveness, rejecting the nihilism that defines her sibling. Nina is brave and empathetic, often putting herself in danger to protect others. Her journey highlights the power of human connection and the choice to remain kind in a world that demands cruelty.
