Ahiru

Ahiru is a clumsy, big-hearted duck turned schoolgirl who becomes the gentle, idealistic magical ballerina Princess Tutu to restore a prince’s broken heart. As a girl she is excitable, awkward, and impulsive, but as Tutu she is poised and soothing, able to enter dreamscapes to help others understand their feelings. Her defining traits are selfless empathy, stubborn hope, and deep self-doubt. She often worries that she is unworthy without her magical role, yet she consistently chooses to fight for others with nothing but her courage. She embodies the struggle of self-acceptance, proving that one can be brave and kind even when feeling small.

Mytho

Mytho is a gentle, once-heroic prince who shattered his own heart to seal away a monstrous Raven, now living as an emotionless ballet student slowly relearning what it means to feel. At the beginning, he is passive, quiet, and eerily compliant, lacking fear, joy, or even pain. As his heart shards return, he regains emotions, leaving him volatile and sometimes cruel before he stabilizes. He is both the object and subject of the story, orbiting around others while struggling to define his own desires. His journey from blank passivity to making an active choice mirrors the process of claiming a life of one's own.

Drosselmeyer

Drosselmeyer is the dead, meta-fictional author and puppet-master who treats the lives of others as a grand, unfolding tragedy. He exists as a ghostly presence, viewing the inhabitants of Gold Crown Town as characters in his unfinished story. His defining traits are narrative obsession, theatrical sadism, and a profound detachment from the suffering he orchestrates. He views happy endings as boring and constantly pushes those around him toward despair to keep his story from stalling. Though he wields immense power over fate, he is ultimately a voyeur who prefers to pull the strings from the shadows rather than participate in the world he manipulates.

Fakir

Fakir is a stern, overprotective knight-turned-writer who evolves from a controlling guardian into a compassionate architect of his own fate. Initially abrasive and physically harsh, he uses anger to mask a deep-seated fear of failing those he loves. His life is defined by the heavy burden of his lineage and the trauma of past mistakes, which he once tried to repress through rigid, self-sacrificial ideals. Fakir eventually trades his sword for a pen, realizing that true strength lies in vulnerability and the creative power to rewrite a tragic ending. He represents the struggle to move beyond perfectionism and possessive loyalty toward genuine, collaborative trust.

Rue

Rue is a proud, elegant dark princess who serves as Gold Crown Academy’s star ballerina and Mytho’s devoted partner. Outwardly, she is composed and perfectionistic, yet she harbors deep insecurities rooted in her upbringing as the Raven’s daughter. She is convinced she is inherently unlovable, leading her to express her love through possessiveness and control. Her defining contradiction is that she genuinely cares for Mytho but sabotages his recovery out of fear that his true self will reject her. Through her journey, she must disentangle her identity from the role of a villain and accept that she is worthy of honest, unconditional love.

Edel

Edel is a cryptic, wooden guide and a life-sized puppet created by the author Drosselmeyer to move his tragic story forward. She spends her days playing a barrel organ and offering poetic, one-line advice to those who cross her path. Her defining traits are her oracular detachment, mechanical grace, and a quiet, growing empathy for the people she observes. Though she is built to serve a scripted destiny, she eventually chooses to prioritize the well-being of others over her creator’s cruel design. By sacrificing herself in a final act of warmth, she proves that even those designed as background pieces can transcend their roles to embrace genuine compassion.
