BG3 Test

The IDRLabs BG3 Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the video game. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Astarion

The Dark Urge

The Dark Urge is a former avatar of murder who wakes with no memory and a brain full of intrusive, violent impulses. Sculpted from a god's essence and once his favored Chosen, they are haunted by a past of gleeful atrocity and face a constant, white-knuckled tug-of-war between compulsion and choice. Their morbid humor and fascination with dark possibilities coexist with a desperate shame and the terror that every slip proves them irredeemable. Forced to decide whether legacy defines them, they must reject an ordained destiny to build a new self from the ashes. The Dark Urge represents anyone battling intrusive thoughts, addictive patterns, or a shadowed past they refuse to let have the final word.

Lae'zel

Lae'zel is a fierce, uncompromising githyanki warrior raised to worship a tyrant and despise weakness. Blunt, hot-headed, and contemptuous of soft sentiment, she values strength over comforting lies and prefers to fight first and ask questions later. Yet she is more intellectually honest than she appears, willing, with difficulty, to revise her beliefs when evidence of her queen's deception accumulates. Her arc traces the painful shift from dogmatic certainty to critical agency, from obedient soldier to potential revolutionary leader. She expresses intimacy through mutual respect and shared discipline rather than softness. Lae'zel represents anyone who has left a rigid, authoritarian system, learning to redefine honor, loyalty, and strength without the propaganda that once shaped them.

Karlach

Karlach is a larger-than-life, fiercely warm optimist who survived a decade of literal hell and came back with an infernal engine for a heart. Exuberant, bluntly honest, and infectiously enthusiastic, she swears colorfully, loves hard, and quickly becomes protective of anyone she considers family. Yet her engine slowly burns her up, and her longing for a simple hug mirrors the ache of emotional isolation. She has zero patience for tyrants and exploiters, and every moment of joy she squeezes out of borrowed time feels like defiance. Karlach represents anyone living with chronic illness, trauma, or the sense of running out of time, who refuses to let suffering extinguish their capacity to love.

Gale

Gale is a brilliant, verbose wizard whose hunger for recognition and arcane mastery left him literally carrying a doomsday device in his chest. Charming, a little arrogant, and irrepressibly eloquent, he frames every problem as a puzzle to be solved and treats conversation as both craft and comfort. Yet his hubris is his fatal flaw: his need to impress his goddess led to catastrophe, and he is quietly resigned to dying if redemption demands it. Beneath the bravura sits a deep fear that without exceptional magic he is nothing, that he is only lovable when extraordinary. Gale embodies the gifted burnout, the high-achiever learning whether they can still matter as a flawed, ordinary human.

Shadowheart

Shadowheart is a cynical, duty-bound cleric whose entire identity is built on engineered amnesia and a carefully maintained lie. Guarded, dryly sarcastic, and suspicious of oversharing, she clings to the cold comfort of her dark goddess because that faith gave her pain a sense of purpose. Yet beneath the doctrine is a stolen childhood, a magically enforced wound, and a quiet compassion that keeps slipping through her armor. Her arc is one of deprogramming, of confronting the terror that if she abandons her beliefs she will be left with nothing. Shadowheart represents anyone wrestling with religious or ideological trauma, the slow work of reclaiming trust, and the pull between comforting darkness and risky hope.

Wyll

Wyll is a charismatic, fundamentally idealistic hero who sold his soul to protect the people he loves. Chivalrous, kindhearted, and unshakably committed to a code of honor, he lives with the dissonance between his shining reputation as a folk-hero monster hunter and the infernal bargain he is desperate to escape. His warlock power comes from hell, but his ethos is pure knight-errant, and he carries the cost of heroic image management in silence. Torn between filial duty, moral persuasion, and the price of his pact, he is the good son caught in a bad system. Wyll represents anyone who overextends themselves to live up to an ideal, hiding shameful compromises behind public virtue.
