The Gintama Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Gintoki Sakata

Gintoki Sakata is a lazy, dead-eyed freelancer who runs from responsibility until someone he cares about is in danger. A former rebel warrior known as the White Demon, he now manages the Yorozuya odd-jobs shop to survive in an alien-occupied Edo. He masks his deep-seated trauma, survivor’s guilt, and depression with a facade of apathy, excessive sugar consumption, and flippant humor. Despite his outward cowardice and avoidance of conflict, he possesses a preternatural calm in battle and a fierce, stubborn loyalty to his found family. He hides his vulnerability behind a lonely smile, choosing to protect others while struggling to forgive himself for his past.

Sougo Okita

Sougo Okita is the Shinsengumi’s First Division captain and a lethal swordsman whose pretty-boy appearance masks a deeply ingrained, sadistic streak. He is a master of deadpan humor, often using elaborate, hyper-violent pranks to express his boredom or to target his rival, Hijikata. Despite his lazy office demeanor and penchant for napping on the job, he possesses a razor-sharp tactical mind and a fierce, unwavering loyalty to Commander Kondo. He hides his vulnerability and emotional depth behind a wall of cruelty and indifference, yet he fights with grim, lethal seriousness whenever his comrades or the people he protects are in genuine danger.

Shinsuke Takasugi

Shinsuke Takasugi is the vengeful leader of the Kiheitai and a former comrade of Gintoki who seeks to destroy the corrupt world that betrayed their teacher. He is defined by his cold, nihilistic intensity and a refusal to move past the trauma of his youth. While his peers eventually chose to adapt or find peace in small, daily lives, he remains trapped in a cycle of rage and destruction. He operates entirely outside of established systems, viewing the current order as a rot that must be burned away. Despite his detachment, he harbors a deep, painful longing for the lost bonds of his past.

Shinpachi Shimura

Shinpachi Shimura is an earnest teenager who balances his role as the voice of reason with the heavy responsibility of maintaining his family’s legacy. As the primary straight man in a world of eccentric monsters, he often feels like a background character, yet he is the glue that holds his chaotic found family together. He is driven by a deep sense of duty toward his sister and his mentor, often suppressing his own insecurities to ensure those around him remain safe. While he frequently blusters and complains, he possesses a quiet, resilient courage that emerges whenever his friends are threatened or his values are challenged.

Isao Kondo

Isao Kondo is the Shinsengumi commander who balances a goofy, often naked exterior with the heart of a true leader. Though he is frequently mocked as a gorilla-like stalker for his obsessive pursuit of Tae Shimura, he is the glue that holds the Shinsengumi together. He inspires fierce loyalty by treating his subordinates as family rather than soldiers, having rescued them from the fringes of society. He is brave, kind, and remarkably optimistic, often failing to see the malice in others. His main contradiction lies in being a powerful, respected authority figure who is simultaneously the most humiliated and vulnerable person in the room.

Kotaro Katsura

Kotaro Katsura is a wanted Joui rebel leader and master escape artist who balances a serious, elegant revolutionary spirit with bizarre, deadpan insanity. He leads a moderate faction focused on strategy and minimizing casualties, earning the nickname Runaway Kotaro for his defensive tactics. While he is a poised commander in serious battles, his daily life is defined by eccentric whimsy, endless disguises, and a stubborn refusal to abandon his ideals. He clings to his past bonds with Gintoki and Takasugi, often using humor and personas to mask a profound, lingering loneliness. Ultimately, he is an activist who struggles to find his place in a changing world.

Toshiro Hijikata

Toshiro Hijikata is the chain-smoking vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, feared as the Demon Vice-Chief for his ruthless enforcement of order. He authored the draconian Kyokuchuu Hatto regulations and demands absolute discipline, yet his rigid exterior masks a deeply protective nature. He frequently risks his life to shield his subordinates, often choosing duty over his own desires. His private life is defined by a bizarre, near-pathological obsession with mayonnaise and a secret, cowardly otaku side that emerges under stress. He struggles to balance his cold, professional mask with a hidden, sentimental heart, often finding himself paralyzed by the heavy burden of being the group’s responsible anchor.

Kagura

Kagura is a teenage girl from the powerful Yato clan who seeks a new life on Earth. She is physically tiny but possesses monstrous strength, often using her umbrella as a weapon or a shield against the sun. Sorachi designed her as an anti-heroine who rejects traditional feminine tropes, favoring bluntness, constant hunger, and crude humor over demure behavior. While she is impulsive and confrontational in daily life, she deeply fears her own violent heritage and struggles to control her berserker instincts when loved ones are in danger. She ultimately chooses kindness and loyalty to her found family at the Yorozuya over her destructive bloodline.
