The IDRlabs Power/Privilege Test is based on the notion of the Power/Privilege Wheel as known from sensitivity training used by governments, NGOs, and others. Central names in connection with similar iterations of the Power/Privilege Wheel are Sylvia Duckworth and Kimberlé Crenshaw. However, numerous versions and variations of the Power/Privilege Wheel or matrix exist. The IDRlabs Power/Privilege Test is the property of IDRlabs.

According to the proponents of intersectional theory, becoming conscious of one’s power and privilege may lead to the equitable and compassionate distribution of the benefits of economic prosperity, which in turn may generally be interpreted as social justice. Social justice is the idea that every person deserves an equal opportunity to enjoy economic, political, and social rights. The goal of social workers is to widen doors of opportunity and access for everyone, but especially for those who are most in need.

Economic justice can also be seen as a part of social justice. The ideal that directs us in developing the institutions we refer to as organized human interactions concerning diversity training can be crucial with regard to achieving social justice. In turn, social institutions give us access to what is beneficial to the person, both individually and in our relationships with others, when they are well arranged. Additionally, social justice places a personal obligation on each of us to collaborate with others to develop and grow.

Social justice adherents thus see themselves as respecting and defending everyone's rights, with the main goal being justice. In order to ensure that everyone has the same opportunities and freedoms, social justice advocates seek the equitable distribution of resources within a community and ultimately all the world. According to the views associated with social justice, access to necessities like food, shelter, and education is necessary for a just society. People, communities, and society as a whole suffer when access is limited due to considerations pertaining to gender, race, or class. The goal of social justice activists is to enhance and restore access so that everyone has an equal chance at living a good life.
