Black Lagoon Test

The IDRLabs Black Lagoon Test is inspired by psychometric methodology and based on research into the characters of the anime series. The test provides feedback such as the following:

Balalaika

Balalaika is a former Soviet Airborne captain turned ruthless mafia general who commands the Thai branch of Hotel Moscow. Scarred by the Afghan war and abandoned by the state she once served, she now operates with a cold, military precision that makes her the most feared power in Roanapur. She runs her syndicate like a private army, demanding absolute loyalty from her veteran soldiers while treating them as her own family. Though she can be affably polite during negotiations, she responds to threats with genocidal intensity. Her core contradiction lies in her transition from a patriotic soldier to a warlord who embodies the very chaos she once fought to suppress.

Eda

Eda is a deceptively cheerful nun operating out of the Rip-Off Church, which serves as a front for weapons smuggling and intelligence gathering in the lawless city of Roanapur. While she presents herself as a boozy, foul-mouthed party girl and Revy’s primary drinking buddy, she is actually a cold-blooded CIA operative. This persona is a calculated mask designed to maintain her cover while she manipulates local power players to serve her agency’s interests. She balances genuine camaraderie with a ruthless willingness to sacrifice others for the mission. Her charm and wit are tools, ensuring she remains an untouchable ghost in a city of killers.

Rock (Rokuro Okajima)

Rock (Rokuro Okajima) is a mild-mannered Japanese salaryman who transforms into a cold, calculating negotiator within the brutal criminal underworld of Roanapur. After being abandoned by his corporate employers and declared dead, he sheds his former life to embrace the lawless freedom of the Lagoon Company. While he initially clings to his pacifist morals, he eventually evolves into a guile-driven strategist who orchestrates high-stakes deals between warring syndicates. He remains a man of deep contradictions, using his intellect to manipulate dangerous killers while struggling to suppress the guilt of his own descent. He is a dark messiah who trades his humanity for influence.

Benny

Benny is the Lagoon Company’s resident hacker and technical specialist, a University of Florida dropout who traded a life in academia for the lawless freedom of Roanapur. He is the crew’s pragmatic anchor, preferring to solve problems with code, cryptography, and fast driving rather than firearms. While he is deeply cynical about institutions—having been burned by both the FBI and the mafia—he maintains a laid-back, sardonic demeanor that contrasts with the constant violence surrounding him. Benny is the ultimate survivor who avoids the spotlight, finding comfort in his machines and the steady, albeit dangerous, paycheck of a professional fixer.

Dutch

Dutch is the African-American leader of the Lagoon Company and captain of the PT boat Black Lagoon. He presents himself as a former U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran who vanished into the mercenary underworld of Roanapur. Calm, laconic, and physically imposing, he serves as the crew’s stable center. He avoids unnecessary fights, preferring to negotiate contracts and pilot the boat, but he is highly capable with firearms when forced into combat. His leadership is professional and pragmatic; he keeps Revy in check, recognizes Rock’s usefulness, and maintains complex relationships with local crime lords. He keeps his emotions strictly compartmentalized, rarely letting personal history surface.

Revy

Revy is the primary gunfighter of the Lagoon Company, a Chinese-American mercenary whose life in the lawless city of Roanapur is defined by dual-wielding pistols and a nihilistic worldview. Raised in the slums of New York, she endured systemic abuse and betrayal that left her deeply traumatized and convinced that money and violence are the only universal truths. While she presents a tough, abrasive exterior, her aggression serves as a shield for profound self-loathing and a fear of intimacy. She mocks the morality of others to justify her own brutality, yet she remains fiercely loyal to her small, broken family of outcasts.

Roberta

Roberta is a former guerrilla and cartel assassin who hides her lethal combat skills behind the persona of a humble, clumsy maid. Driven by a desperate need for atonement, she serves the noble Lovelace family with unwavering devotion while struggling to suppress the violent instincts of her past. Her core contradiction lies in her attempt to find redemption through even greater bloodshed, a cycle that repeatedly pushes her toward madness and self-destruction. Though she is capable of immense tenderness toward those she protects, she remains a terrifying force of nature who views her own suffering as a necessary penance for her unforgivable history.
